ENERGY AND RENEWABLES
Hydrogen and ammonia
Hydrogen and ammonia are important contributions to sustainable energy development. Industrial-scale hydrogen production with carbon capture and storage (CCS) could be key to reaching Norway’s and Europe’s climate goals by 2050because it is an environmentally friendly energy carrier and can replace fossil energy sources.
Unlike the petroleum industry, which has decades of experience and a high degree of standardization, plants for hydrogen and ammonia are still relatively new and not very standardized. Our knowledge- and risk-based approach gives you the support you need along the way.
Burning hydrogen produces no greenhouse gases, but can have a higher risk of fires and explosions. Liquid ammonia is an easier and safer way to store and transport hydrogen than pure hydrogen. Ammonia can either be converted back to hydrogen or burned directly. The combustion of ammonia also produces no greenhouse gases. Ammonia has a low fire and explosion risk, but is highly toxic.
We have the expertise to assess the hazards of hydrogen and ammonia. We provide decision support and ensure that projects meet relevant regulatory requirements. We also work with organizational development and management consulting.
Risk management is at the heart of how we go to work every day to make a difference – so that our customers make better decisions, reach their goals and solve society’s challenges. For decades, Proactima has supported companies looking to establish themselves on the Norwegian continental shelf and within new energy – and we stand ready to assist new and established players in Norway.
Proactima has experience from many sectors of the energy industry and we bring best practices across other sectors into the hydrogen industry. We do this through a risk-based approach where we first need to understand what is important and then prioritize correctly. We are multidisciplinary and can provide the necessary professional expertise along the way, and all the way to the finish line. Secondly, our consultants make real and tangible contributions to the projects, contributing with implementation skills in addition to the right strategy and prioritization. And last but not least: We have a proven track record of success with such projects many times before.
This is how we make a difference and assist players in the hydrogen industry:
Risk analysis
We assess hazards with flammable or toxic substances, such as hydrogen, ammonia or carbon dioxide. We do everything from qualitative analyses, HAZID, ROS analyses to quantitative with advanced CFD simulations, depending on what is most appropriate.
Risk assessments are required in several key regulations such as “Regulations on the handling of hazardous substances” and “Regulations on health and safety in explosive atmospheres”. Facilities over a certain size will be subject to the Major Accident Regulations and we can provide risk analyses with consideration zones, in accordance with DSB’s guidelines for quantitative risk analyses.
Project support
We provide consultancy and studies for projects.
Studies that will be relevant for hydrogen and ammonia plants are:
- Simulation of gas dispersion to assess distances to third parties and risk to own employees. Typical emission points are leaks from equipment, ventilation returns or unignited flare emissions.
- Simulation of heat radiation from torch, to decide height and placement.
- Simulation of fires and explosions, to understand selected scenarios or as part of a risk analysis.
- To simulate consequences, we have simple tools such as Effects/RiskCurves, or advanced ones such as KFX or FLACS.
- Escape and evacuation analyses, as well as contingency analysis and planning.
- Development of a strategy to prevent and limit major accidents, based on relevant risk analyses.
- Preparation of explosion protection document with supporting documentation.
- Reliability and uptime analyses to optimize or verify the availability of a facility. We use the Miriam tool.
Organization and management
We have extensive experience with tailored assignments in management systems and organizational development, including establishing new businesses in Norway.

Successful Gathering at Tensio
“Now it’s serious” for the Norwegian energy industry was one of the key messages during the first gathering of the year at Forum for risk management in the energy industry. The need for a better and more comprehensive overview of the consequences of power outage in society and increased cross-sector collaboration at regional and national...
